I was commissioned to paint a photo of Berend McKenzie in drag.
Berend Mckenzie is an actor who written, performed a play that was about his life being black and gay in the world. Directed by Allen MacInnis and Tanisha Taitt, Nggrfg is a riotous and poignant one-man tour-de-force about being black and gay in a world that doesn’t always have room for either. Inspired by words that are used to oppress, Nggrfg explores the impact of those two words in intimate and humorous ways. Nggrfg has just finished hugely successful runs in Edmonton and Vancouver run, and the audiences want more! He will be performing the show in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland.

Inspired by his play and the commission piece, I wanted to talk about the subject of hate through art.
Bio
Self taught artist G Luve, first relied on instinct to guide his visual expression, building the background for his medium early on. His first figure drawing studies at age seven, followed by break-dance inspired teen graffiti, and a steady stream of murals and paintings cumulatively honed his talent, leading the artist to create his first solo exhibits “G” (Vancouver 2002), and “Drag” (Vancouver 2005). Basing his process on intuition, G’s message is to share his reflections of life and the living spirit through vivid acrylic color. Most influenced by Warhol, Dali and Van Gogh, the artist simultaneously associates the perceived emotion with that inherently unseen. His intention therein is to expose a different reality, and perhaps a deeper one. The passion of “ Luve” knows no bounds and has garnered G his reputation as one smoking hot DJ, prolific painter, promoter and a strong philanthropic presence on the scene.
