G-Luve

I was commissioned to paint a photo of Berend McKenzie in drag.

Berend Mckenzie is an actor who written, performed a play that was about his life being black and gay in the world. Directed by Allen MacInnis and Tanisha Taitt, Nggrfg is a riotous and poignant one-man tour-de-force about being black and gay in a world that doesn’t always have room for either. Inspired by words that are used to oppress, Nggrfg explores the impact of those two words in intimate and humorous ways. Nggrfg has just finished hugely successful runs in Edmonton and Vancouver run, and the audiences want more! He will be performing the show in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland.

Inspired by his play and the commission piece, I wanted to talk about the subject of hate through art.

Bio

Self taught artist G Luve, first relied on instinct to guide his visual expression, building the background for his medium early on. His first figure drawing studies at age seven, followed by break-dance inspired teen graffiti, and a steady stream of murals and paintings cumulatively honed his talent, leading the artist to create his first solo exhibits “G” (Vancouver 2002), and “Drag” (Vancouver 2005). Basing his process on intuition, G’s message is to share his reflections of life and the living spirit through vivid acrylic color. Most influenced by Warhol, Dali and Van Gogh, the artist simultaneously associates the perceived emotion with that inherently unseen. His intention therein is to expose a different reality, and perhaps a deeper one. The passion of “ Luve” knows no bounds and has garnered G his reputation as one smoking hot DJ, prolific painter, promoter and a strong philanthropic presence on the scene.

Marina Nazarova

Biography

Recently graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design I endeavor to find my role as an emerging artist in Vancouver’s cultural scene. As I am searching for my own identity during my artis-tic practice I am also concerned how I can depict the diverse identity of the city’s community. Strolling the streets of Vancouver and taking pictures of strangers have become important components of my creative process; as a result these images are translated into large paintings. In my figurative work I am interested in people and spaces, as I tend to investigate themes of individuality, social and personal identities, and dialogue with the other.

The Contingency Plan - Dance

Dancer: Vanessa Goodman

CLOSING SOIREE

Featuring Live Performances: Sunday, October 2nd 7PM-10PM

The Contingency Plan
http://contingencyplan.ca/

Adhere explores themes of isolation and how it relates to a sense of place within oneself and the world we inhabit. It investigates the shifting nature of our personal experiences with isolation and how these are a necessary part of human understanding and development. We are interested in creating an imagistic work that shifts easily between the abstract expression of texture and sensation, and the small stories and realizations collected during a lifetime.

*The full work will premiere January 11th to 14th, 2012 at The Firehall Arts Centre

The Contingency Plan is a contemporary dance collective whose focus is to create and present work that is socially relevant and accessible. We wish to create a dialogue that allows society to examine the world around us and process it through the art of dance. The Contingency Plan is a collective of three contemporary dancers, Vanessa Goodman, Jane Osborne, and Leigha Wald. Our goal is to engage audiences with work that is exciting, physical and highly visceral. Our mandate is to integrate communities by creating an opportunity for audiences to fully engage in work that is honest and sincere.

Artist Statement

Imaging Vancouver is a sub-project from the performance work Mesoshpere with Maia Love, Darcy, McMurray, Faye Mallet, and Miles Thorogood.  Imaging Vancouver is a further investigation to the intersections between body, environment, and technology. Specifically, we explore relationships between individual identity and place through technology mediated representations.

Participants are invited to interact with the system.  A persons body in space is mapped using the Kinect 3D capture camera.  The depth map data is combined with pixel information from video footage of street level activity in Vancouver.  The resulting artifact, somewhat reminisce of the brain scans reading peoples dreams, is the viewers body seen as individual of components of the video, like a real-time stencil. Imaging Vancouver is currently in version 1 of beta and we welcome any feedback on the system.

Artist Statement

My work is influenced by people identity and environment. I’m interested in our desire and instinct to observe one another.  It is natural to draw conclusions on others.  A person’s identity will often draw a romantic conclusion in my mind when it is not the reality of the situation.  The grief we encounter in life becomes present in our faces.
